I had a guest check in yesterday who had a name that looked simple enough, but I completely butchered the pronunciation… It turned into a mini stand-up routine as I fumbled through trying to correct myself. Has anyone else had a similar experience? It always seems to happen right when you want to sound professional?
I totally get that! It’s nerve-wracking when you just want to sound professional. Ever tried writing the names phonetically before checking them in?
Totally agree on the autolyse timing — you really can taste the difference! I recently pushed mine to 75 minutes and noticed how the dough was much more pliable. Have you tried varying the hydration as well?
I’ve definitely turned name mispronunciations into awkward moments myself! One time, I ended up calling a guest by the wrong name three times during check-in; the look on their face was priceless. I started writing names phonetically too — it makes a world of difference.
It’s always the simplest names that trip us up! I’ve started practicing tricky ones out loud before shifts. Have you thought about rehearsing a bit beforehand?
